I rest my head on his belly, gently, no smooshing. I hear his rumble, like thunder in the distance right here beneath my ear, and I skritch his neck. He stretches out under my head, his claws tangling in my hair, his eyes blinking a friendly welcome. I inhale deeply, breathing in the warm scent of feline life, and blink back, speaking his language, bridging the gap. We are alien to each other; aliens, friends, companions.

Warm in the sun together, we snooze. Our hearts beat in rhythm out of sync. He purrs deeply, I sigh deeply, we bond.

She rested her cheek against the rock. Even with the sun’s rays caressing its surface, it was cold against her skin. Her fingers absently traced the ancient carvings as she wondered for the hundredth time what they said.

Thick mist swirled in the air around her, mixing with her breath. Clarity struck, her eyes flew open. She knew! She knew the meaning in the words as though they were written for her. She tried to stand but found her hands stuck to the rock. She tried to call out, but the mist filled her lungs, silencing her. Slowly, the struggle drained from her body. She collapsed against the rock. Her body curled around it, fading into it. After a time, passers-by could not tell the two apart.
